CSIRO Launches Australian Housing Data Portal to Track Energy Efficiency Progress

CSIRO has developed a new data portal that provides insights into Australia's progress towards more energy-efficient homes, using data from over 130,000 NatHERS energy ratings added annually.

CSIRO has launched the Australian Housing Data portal to help stakeholders understand how Australia is progressing towards energy-efficient, low-emission dwellings and suburbs. The portal features interactive dashboards that allow homeowners and industry professionals to explore energy efficiency metrics across all states and territories.

How the Data Portal Works

The dashboards primarily utilise data gathered from the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme's Universal Certificates, which is the assessment pathway used by the majority of new dwellings in Australia to comply with energy efficiency requirements in the National Construction Code. Around 130,000 certificates are added to the database each year, with the dashboards updated monthly.

Key Metrics Available

Users can select their state or territory and dwelling type to view average results for the last 12 months. The portal displays:

  • NatHERS star ratings for houses and apartments
  • Construction systems and materials used
  • Average internal dwelling area
  • Number of dwellings assessed in each region

National Overview

According to the latest data, Australian houses achieve an average rating of 7.0 out of 10 stars, whilst apartments rate slightly higher at 7.2 stars. The data reveals variations across states, with Western Australian apartments performing strongest at 8.0 stars, whilst Northern Territory houses score lowest at 6.4 stars.
